Charges imposed by budget airlines and other companies for credit card payments may be outlawed after a complaint by consumer group Which?
Although on average it costs 20p per debit card payment and no more than 2% of the total value for a credit card transaction, some low-cost airlines are charging a fee per passenger, per leg of the journey, even though they only have to process one transaction. This can, for example, result in a family of four booking a return flight being charged an extra £40 if they pay by card.
Credit card surcharges imposed by some companies can increase costs by over 200% - for example, a £1.70 train ticket might cost an extra £3.50 if paid for by card.
